Are vines usually just one plant that branches out into many plants? Or are all the strands different plants?

Depends on the establish......let me give a couple examples.
Less aggressive vines,
Wisteria: often grown as a separate trunk vine (often grafted).
More aggressive vines are a bit different
Honeysuckle: grows very brisk and will often
